Costs

H aving the money in the bank to cover my little adventure, it’s fair to say that I didn’t exactly worry about the budget too much. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t choose the most expensive place to stay or eat – well…not all of the time – but then again, I didn’t choose the cheapest either. I stayed in a few youth hostels and to be honest, they’re not for me. I never had the fear of running out of money, which I guess is obvious from the figures below?

The tables below detail all of my costs on accommodation, food (including drink) and also any extras I had to pay for along the way, like replacing kit and so on.

One thing they don’t cover is the initial cost of all of my kit. To be honest, I’m not sure where I’ve put that information but considering I had to buy everything, that didn’t exactly work out to be a cheap start either and easily came in over £1000. And we won’t mention the mortgage, council tax etc. that still needed to be paid while I was off having fun!

It should be noted that these are the prices I paid in 2010 so things may be a lot different now!

Overall, I think it’s fair to say that it’s not the cheapest thing to do this walking up the country lark, spending £6,669.60 in total from the time I got to Penzance on the 6th May 2010 to when I got back to Wick having completed my walk on the 1st August 2010. I’m sure people have managed to do it a lot cheaper than I did but I knew I would miss my creature comforts if I tried to complete the adventure on an unnecessarily tight budget.

If I took absolutely everything into account – initial kit costs, mortgage, etc. – it probably cost me over £10,000 to undertake this adventure. That’s a lot of money but I can honestly say I don’t regret spending a single penny of it. This is something that will be with me until my dying day and has changed me in more ways than I ever imagined.
